How to Get an OpenRouter API Key
OpenRouter is a single key in front of most of the industry. For someone still deciding which model family suits their work, it is the cheapest way to try a lot of them without opening a lot of accounts.

Getting the key
- Open openrouter.ai/keys and sign in with Google, GitHub or an email address.
- Press Create Key. You can set a credit limit on the key itself, which is worth doing: it caps what that one key can ever spend, independently of your balance.
- Copy it. It starts with
sk-or-. - In Calik AI, open API keys, choose OpenRouter, paste and save.
- When picking a model, choose one whose id ends in
:free. Anything else draws on a balance.
Which model to start on
Use OpenRouter to find the model, then get a direct key from whoever made it. The router adds a small margin and a hop, which is a fair price for trying twenty models in an afternoon and a poor one for running the same model every day. Once you know what you want, a direct key is cheaper and faster.

If you would rather not pay
OpenRouter's free models are already a free route. For more headroom, Google AI Studio and Groq have their own free tiers with no router in between. The Get API page has all 27 providers with the steps for each.
Where the key goes
Calik AI never resells tokens, so the key you just created is the whole billing relationship: your prompts go from your device straight to OpenRouter, and the bill is theirs to send. The key is written to your device's encrypted storage and is not copied to our servers, our database or our backups.

Is OpenRouter free?
Partly. Some models on it are priced at zero and cost nothing to use with a free account. Everything else draws on a prepaid balance. Which models are free changes over time, so check the id ends in :free before a long session.
Should I use OpenRouter or go direct to each provider?
Use it to explore, then go direct for the model you settle on. One key across a hundred models is worth a great deal while you are deciding and worth less once you have decided, because the router adds a margin and an extra hop.
Does Calik AI support both at once?
Yes. There is a key slot per provider, so an OpenRouter key and direct keys can be connected together, and Agent Mesh can mix models from all of them in one run.
Why do some models fail with no allowed providers?
OpenRouter lets you exclude providers on data policy grounds, and if your settings exclude everyone who serves that model, the request has nowhere to go. Loosen the policy or pick another model.
Can I cap what a key can spend?
Yes, and you should. OpenRouter lets you set a credit limit on the individual key, so a runaway loop cannot spend more than that number regardless of your balance.
